Chiang Kai Shek College Youth Choir ...makes history... ...makes its mark... ...a tough act... ...a legacy... Established in 1980, the group was formerly known as the Chiang Kai Shek College Children’s Choir, a Filipino-Chinese choral group which was initially composed of elementary students who love to sing, and had later on accepted high school students including the ones who were elevated from primary education. It is a training ground for potential singers and artists. For years, it has proved to be not only a venue for meeting new friends but at the same time a place for having fun while making good music. It is also a witness to countless life-long friendships that have blossomed throughout the years. Ms. Irma Tan-Su, the accompanist then, assumed post as conductor in 1990. Since then, she was motivated to take the choir a notch higher. Through much hard work, patience and perseverance, things started falling into place when the choir bagged the 1st prize in a Filipino-Chinese Inter-School Choral Competition in 1993. In 1995, they mounted a two-night full length concert entitled “My Voice, Our Voice Across the World” showcasing the group’s versatility in performing and singing songs in different languages. In the same year, they took home the top spot in a Choral Competition sponsored by Hapee Toothpaste. The group made their mark in the Filipino community when they joined the prestigious National Music Competition for Young Artists (NAMCYA) Youth Choir category in 1996 and won 1st place in the National Capital Region (NCR) Regional Finals and 3rd place in the National Finals; thus changing the group’s name to Chiang Kai Shek College Youth Choir. This also paved way for the choir to share their music in various cities in Taiwan. Just last year, the group went on their first international stint when they joined “A Voyage of Songs” International Choral Festival held in Pattaya, Thailand and was awarded 2 gold medals in Open Equal Voices & Folklore categories. The group was fortunate to gain entry into the Grand Finals and was acclaimed “Most Promising Choir”. To date, the choir has constantly been invited by different organizations to perform in a number of special events, concerts, and outreach programs, some of which were graced by President Gloria M. Arroyo, Senator Franklin Drilon, etc. They are one of the lucky few who had their stint in NAMCYA Silver Jubilee National Music Festival in 1997 and some songs of which were included in the festival’s compilation album. They also had the honor of working with Mr. Errki Pohjola of Finland and Ms. Doreen Rao of Canada as these world-renowned conductors’ laboratory choir. They are also the first and only Filipino-Chinese choral group to join functions of Filipino heritage such as the Independence Day Centennial celebration at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) with Dr. Ramon P. Santos, National Arts Month, a thousand-voices Christmas concert “Noel, Noel” with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, Kaisa Foundation’s musical play “Tsinoy”, etc. In 1999, the choir was a guest performer in the collaboration of CCP & The British Council’s “The Red Thread”, a contemporary theatrical play. They were one of the guest choirs alongside The Philippine Madrigal Singers in a concert entitled “With One Voice” featuring The Onnuri Seraphim Choir, a Korean Children’s Choir, and recently in the 2nd “With One Voice” concert series featuring The Gwacheon City Women’s Choir also from Korea. The group also frequents various shopping malls such as Shangri-la Plaza, Rockwell, Greenbelt, etc. for its Christmas and Chinese New Year celebrations, and at the same time, they were fortunate to sing alongside Philippine Opera Company artists, The Philippine Madrigal Singers, Miss Vina Morales, etc. when they were invited to join “Adeste Fideles” in both 2006 & 2007 Christmas concerts. They have also undergone a series of vocal workshops administered by conductors Jonathan Velasco, Joel Navarro, and Ms. Cherrie Pangilinan, a singer and voice pedagogue. Enchanting the people on its 28th year, the Chiang Kai Shek College Youth Choir has its feet firmly planted on the ground. Having been equipped with more experiences, striving for more accomplishments, and constantly improving on its craft, this group from humble beginnings embarks on an even greater journey to convey their message through music with their God-given talents. Indeed, life will never be complete without music running through their veins. The song they sing is the air they breathe.
